This afternoon I watched a video called End of the Century. The video is basically the history of The Ramones. I will need to watch this film again for further study. The Ramones were pretty much the progenitors of punk rock. Like most pioneers in any field of endeavor they did have much commercial success. This appears to be the fate of artists who say true to their art and refuse to compromise it. The Ramone's came along at a time when they were badly needed. The youth of their era required a band that had plenty of attitude but were not musical geniuses. Not every kid who picks up the guitar is going to be able to play like Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton. However, if they learned some power chords they can make an awful lot of noise and have fun doing it. Enter the Ramones and later on bands like Motorhead. One of the great pleasures of life cranking up the distortion on your amp and blasting out power chords on your guitar.
