The Penn State Cover Up
It's Time to Stop the Cover Ups
First of all it is Remembrance Day in Canada today. It is a time when we remember the sacrifice that our soldiers made so that we may enjoy the freedoms that we enjoy today.
Now I wish o comment to the Penn State situation. How could this happen and go unreported for so long? What I'm talking about is the sexual abuse of children by people who should be their role models. The real tragedy is that Penn State is just the tip of the iceberg. This travesty is happening to children as we speak. It is quite common for pedophiles to get either paid or volunteer jobs where they will have a lot of contact with children. These positions include teachers, coaches, scout, leaders, clergy and several others. What is shocking is the number of sexual predators in the general population. Of course, you don't need to have a high profile position to be a sexual predator. Sexual predators can be parents, step-parents, relatives, neighbours and friends of the family.
Getting back to the Penn State case it is not going to solve the problem by firing Joe Paterno. Coach Paterno should have called the police and not just inform university officials of the alleged sexual abuse of a child. The present assistant coach should have called the police immediately when he witnessed the incident. Why didn't he pull the former coach off the child? Taking it a step further why didn't this guy physically assault the coach? He, too, thought he had done his duty by reporting the incident to university officials. The biggest question is why didn't the university administrators immediately call the police when Joe Paterno reported the sexual assault to them?
