The Cover Up Novel Part Twenty-Six by Ken David Stewart
New
Scene:
This
was not a phone call that Charles Brooks wanted to make but he felt
that it was both necessary and appropriate.
“Hello
Peter. It's Charles Brooks calling.”
“Hello
Charles,” Peter said with a sigh.
“I'm
very sorry to hear about your son. Meredith really cared about him. I
had only met Bret a couple of times but he seemed to be an
outstanding young man.”
Charles
Brooks mainly said this because he felt that it was the right thing
to be said in theses circumstances. Although he had met Bret and
found him to be very likeable he was worried about how attached his
daughter was getting to him. The last thing Charles wanted was for
Meredith to get involved with a young man with such as serious mental
health diagnosis. His wife was a physician and had told Charles all
the facts about schizoaffective disorder. She explained the extreme
highs and lows, the paranoia and the hallucinations. The worst part
was the prognosis. Bret was likely to have this illness for the rest
of his life. Charles Brooks felt that his daughter is fortunate that
Bret passed away. If she were to get married to him she would have a
life of heartache ahead of her. He was greatly relieved when she told
him that she had broken off her relationship with Bret Daniels.
“I
can't imagine the pain you're going through Peter. I don't know what
I would do if anything happened to Meredith,” said Charles.
“I
appreciate your calling, Charles. This is an enormous shock for my
wife and I,” said Peter.
“Maybe
I'm out of line in saying this Peter, But Meredith told me that she
didn't break up with Bret because she didn't love him. She broke it
off because you couldn't stand to see Bret back with his old high
school friends, Derek and Randy. Meredith felt that they would
destroy his life.”
“I
think she was right Charles. If only Bret would have listened to
Meredith
I'm
certain that my son would still be alive.”
“Do
you think that Randy and Derek were involved somehow in Bret's
passing?”
“I'm
certain of it,” replied Peter.
