Computers, Technology and Social Media
The PC, the Internet, Blogs And Rocking in the Free World
I have been reading several blogs recently on topics such as the impact of computers on our modern society. There has been much discussion on the way social media has affected our culture. As an older person I grew up without computers, ipods, mp3 players, Playstation, Xbox, cell phones, digital cameras and assorted other recent technology. My conclusion is that this stuff, for the most part, is great. Yes, I am aware of the numerous, nefarious ways that some people and organizations have and presently are abusing this technology. Unfortunately, this is true of most things in life. There will always be people who use things for negative reasons and those that use things for positive purposes.
I, for one, would not want to part with my PC. Not because it’s a great PC but just because it brings me a great deal of joy when it’s working properly.
Decades ago I would never have dreamed that I would be able to sit in front of a screen and communicate with people from different countries. How about being able to post pictures and download music? If I had nothing else to do and no one else to be with I could literally spend all my time in front of my PC getting an education and being thoroughly entertained. With the advent of the social media and blogging sites I would never feel totally alone. Fortunately, I do have people in my life that I like to spend time with but it is also good to know that there is also an online community out there.
