The New Music
My
Generation
This week I
decided I would try something different. Closing in on 60 years of
age I listen to a lot of music from the 1960s and 1970s. On an
Internet site I discovered some thing called creative Commons mix
tapes. This is basically a forum where new artists can make their
music available to the general public and get some necessary
exposure. I don't know how long it's been since I last listened to
any contemporary music. The last music that I seriously liked was
Seattle grunge music from the nineties. My thinking must be that the
music that I grew up on was so good that I don't see any need to
listen to modern music. However, I have kept asking myself, "I
wonder what young people are listening to today?” This week I
decided through the new Creative Commons mix tapes to listen to the
sampling of contemporary music released by new artists. I was
pleasantly surprised to find out that a lot of the new music is
actually quite good. Of course, it would sound better if I was a
young person listening to it. I listened to a song called Kickback
by a band called Sick of Sarah. I actually liked the song and decided
to listen to a few more new artists. I also listened to a duo called
No Way Josie. They have released a cool song called Want It Back. The
music that I sampled was very eclectic. Some of it was obviously
dance music. Other genres included soft rock ballads, electronica,
and what I would have to call industrial grunge. I am very pleased to
see that through certain Internet sites young artists have a medium
to expose their talent to the world.
