The American School System

A couple of weeks ago I watched a documentary about the American public education system. The program talked about home schooling, chartered schools and students graduating from high school who are functionally illiterate. It also talked about a strong teacher's union that protects ineffective teachers. This film painted a very bleak picture of public education in the United States. I am a blogger from Canada. The majority of blogs that I read are written by Americans. I have read a lot of your blogs and you people strike me as being well read and very articulate. There is no evidence of a failing educational system in your blogs. I am wondering if the problems that are occurring in the American public schools are mostly found in the inner cities where poverty is prevalent.What is the real story here?
